Turn on the TV, and you’re bound to be mesmerized by the nail-biting wrestling matches that are on air. Most people are familiar with American wrestling for this reason, but there’s a whole world of wrestling out there.
For example, there’s luchador wrestling, which is unique to Mexico. This professional sport is iconic in the nation, and you get a glimpse into Mexican culture too.
If you think that a luchador wrestling experience would be a blast as a team-building event, then you’re definitely correct! Keep reading to learn more about what Grupo Events can do for you.
“Luchador” (plural would be “luchadores”) is the term for a professional wrestler in Lucha Libre, which is the name for Mexican wrestling. It dates back to the mid to late 1800s, so it’s been around for a while.
“Lucha Libre” literally means “free fight” in Spanish, so you can imagine what fun chaos it could be! This type of wrestling is characterized by high-flying maneuvers, but what’s really notable is the luchadores themselves.
They wear elaborate masks (máscaras), which are a signature element of Lucha Libre (these masks usually match the Lycra outfits the luchadores wear). These masks symbolize the luchador’s identity, and they may represent things like animals, gods, or cultural themes. If a luchador loses their máscara in a match, then it can be quite a dramatic and career-defining event!
Also, the matches are more than people doing a sport; they’re theatrical spectacles too. Luchadors take on personas, and they often play the roles of técnicos (good guys) and rudos (bad guys). As you might’ve guessed, you’ll witness an awesome story unfold!
Famous Mexican luchadores include El Santo, Blue Demon, and Rey Mysterio. They all have achieved legendary statuses, which makes them cultural icons.
Watching Lucha Libre can be thrilling, but participating in a match can be an extraordinary time. But why should you choose this experience over others for team-building?
Donning a luchador mask can help people break out of their shells since their true selves are literally masked. This allows them to step out of their everyday roles and embrace playful, larger-than-life personas.
Think of it as a fun and colorful icebreaker. The luchador wrestling experience will encourage openness, reduce formalities, and foster a sense of equality among team members.
Lucha libre isn’t about letting punches fly recklessly. Instead, it requires coordination and communication between everyone. In addition, team members have to trust one another to carry out the choreography safely.
A luchador wrestling experience doesn’t involve only wrestling either. Members must work together to brand and promote their team, as well as:
As we’ve just mentioned, teams will have to come up with a whole show for their luchador experience. When creating their own wrestling personas, your employees will see creativity and self-expression shine through.
Plus, performing moves or acting out dramatic “rivalries” can boost confidence in a fun and supportive setting.
If you’re already in Mexico for a corporate retreat, then you’re probably curious about the local culture. Considering that it’s a national treasure, lucha libre shouldn’t be missed.
When you book a luchador wrestling for team-building, everyone will enjoy a meaningful and authentic experience. They’ll gain cultural insights that connect them to the local community and traditions.
When it comes down to it, taking on the persona of a luchador or doing anything related to their performance is extremely fun. Unlike typical team-building exercises, this one is energetic and packed with humor, leaving a lasting impression.
Long after you go home, you’ll remember the laughter and camaraderie that went down in Mexico.
We’re pleased to tell you that the newest activity on our roster is the Luchado Showdown. What’s great is that it’s good for groups as small as 20 and as big as 200 or more (if you’re bringing more than 200 people though, please let us know ASAP so we can accommodate you accordingly).
If you’re pressed for time and would like to do other things while in Mexico, then don’t sweat it. The Luchador Showdown lasts between two to three hours, so you’ll have plenty of time to fit other activities in.
Here’s a breakdown of what to expect.
You don’t have to do any of the setup; our staff will handle it all. We can run Luchador Showdowns at any location, including your hotel. We’ll show up with all the equipment and have everything ready to go when your workforce arrives.
After your work group has arrived, we’ll do a quick icebreaker. This will get everyone amped up to tackle the wrestling tasks.
We’ll also go over what Lucha Libre is so there’s a cultural understanding of it.
The large group will then be broken down into smaller teams of six to eight members. Within these teams, you’ll assign roles, with each person (or pair) overseeing different aspects of the match.
Some time will be devoted to team branding and promotion, as well as the collaborative wrestling routine. This is where you can go crazy with your creativity!
We’ll have professional choreographers to ensure that everything’s fun and interesting, yet safe.
Before the actual showdown, each time will have a quick rehearsal to go over their routines.
At the actual event, the performance will be watched by other participants and judges. The latter will give out scores based on set criteria.
Ultimately, teams will be awarded for different things, such as Best Team Performance!
Admit it: a luchador wrestling experience may not be the first thing on your mind when it comes to team-building, and you may not have even known it existed.
So why not sign your company up for a unique experience? They’ll be boasting to their friends that they had a blast participating in this vibrant cultural performance.
